The Healing Power of Reiki in Hospice Care
“She opened her eyes and gave me the brightest, biggest smile.”
It’s the power of energy and a holistic approach to hospice care.
Cara Surreira was inspired to become a Reiki Master in 2023 when her own grandmother, who was living with dementia, was nearing the end of her life. She witnessed firsthand how Reiki could make a positive impact—connecting with individuals on an energetic level, encouraging deep relaxation, and bringing about noticeable, positive changes.
“There’s a calmness and stillness that comes with a session,” Surreira said. “I was really surprised myself by how powerful it was.”
Today, Surreira is one of several volunteers at Hospice of Western & Central Massachusetts certified to offer Reiki.
It’s part of a broader initiative led by Volunteer Coordinator Cara Krol, M.Ed., to integrate healing modalities into the volunteer program—helping Hospice of Western & Central Massachusetts provide truly holistic support for patients and families.

Pauline’s daughter, Valerie, has witnessed the difference.
“I think Cara has a lot of talent and she’s very good with patients,” she said. “When it seems like (her mother, Pauline) is anxious, it just calms her down. I see her get comfortable and she seems to really like it. It’s not invasive at all, and yet, her muscles are completely relaxed and her whole body gets energy work.”
Surreira recalled one recent visit when Pauline seemed “a little off” and lethargic. After the session, she seemed more focused, less confused and started speaking and smiling more. She was simply more herself.
This, Krol explains, is exactly what a holistic approach can bring to hospice care.
“For an individual who qualifies for hospice, there is so much going on, both medically, socially and spiritually. It can be overwhelming for patients and families,” said Krol. “By integrating modalities like Reiki, we can help patients and families get more grounded and live in the moment, as every moment is so precious.”
