A Home Run Day for Two Baseball-Loving Brothers

A Home Run Day for Two Baseball-Loving Brothers

WORCESTER, M.A. — “We’re gonna get a hot dog, right?”

That was the first order of business when brothers Ed and Steven Waskiewicz learned they’d be heading to a Worcester Red Sox (WooSox) game. At 91 and 93 years young, the two have shared a lot over the years—but nothing has bonded them quite like their love for baseball.

Both former semi-professional players, Ed and Steven have spent a lifetime debating who was the better ballplayer (each claims the title, of course). But one thing they both agree on? There’s no better way to spend the day than at the ballpark, hot dog in hand.

Thanks to the thoughtful coordination of Hospice of Western & Central Massachusetts, that’s exactly what they got to do. On a beautiful sunny day, the brothers were treated to a special outing to Polar Park in Worcester to watch the WooSox take on the Rochester Red Wings.

Social worker Mark Cronin, LSWA, organized the day and transportation with help from Parsons Hill Rehabilitation & Health Care Center. He picked up Steven from Webster Manor Healthcare Center and Ed from next door at Lanessa Extended Care Facility, and the group was off to the ballpark. Joining them were hospice nurse Tammy Shippee and chaplain Geovannie Sanchez-Diaz—both there to ensure comfort, care, and plenty of smiles along the way.

The best part? The WooSox clinched a 9–6 win, capping off a day already filled with laughter, nostalgia, and brotherly love.

Baseball, after all, is more than a game. It’s memories made, stories shared, and—for Ed and Steven—a lasting connection that continues to bring them joy.
